From Rivera's Groove Box #340: SlothBoogie - Acid Fantasy

Nice edit of the italo disco hit Plustwo 'Stop Fantasy' giving it some more oomph and uunnh boompty house beats action. The SlothBoogie crew is really good when it comes to making edits. Plustwo was a very short lived italo disco project because the record label went bankrupt and the band disbanded because of personal differences. Their biggest hit is know for the very early use of Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer, which became later know universally as the sound of acid house. It is a well known fact that the Italian disco producers were very keen and curious about the latest synthesizers coming out at the time in early 80s and utilized many gadgets other musicians thought of unorthodox and unnatural sounding, like the Roland drum machines.

From Rivera's Groove Box #339: DJ Chupacabra - Milkdrop

Boom shaka laka, this is the sound of clunking garage house beats. Garage house makes my heart sing, I just love the warm electric keys chords and its twisted progressions. DJ Chupacabra is an italian DJ & producer who seems to know the recipe for how to put together a proper deep garage house track. Excellent old school vibes in this mother.

From Rivera's Groove Box #338: Steril Feat. Sue M - Reprise

I'm glad I have digged the crates in the past, because otherwise I wouldn't have such gems in my record collection. While I buy less and less new music on vinyl, I still like to to dig the crates when I find myself at a record shop. This track is from the DJ Intertnational Gigolo label, which is run by DJ Hell. Sue M is Sawako Murata and I don't think she has been featured in many songs. At least, this is her only song credit according to Discogs. Chilling downbeat electro!

From Rivera's Groove Box #337: West Coast Swingaz - Feel Dem Vibez

Feel them vibes. I know you want to. Something for ya house heads. West Coast Swingaz delivering a phat track with a nice and tight house groove, swinging beefed up drums and some raw sounding chords.

From Rivera's Groove Box #336: Krewcial - Hit Me Off

Krewcial is DJ & producer who started out with hip hop, but now is trying his hand in house music. He has released some proper tracks on labels like Lumberjacks In Hell, We Play House and Robsoul - which is impressive. I really dig this tune, it's jazzed up and has that nice soulful groove. Hit me off.

From Rivera's Groove Box #335: Plastic Park Meet's Alexander Purkart - Music's Hypnotisn

Secret weapon alert. Vocals are taken from Raw Silk 'Do It To The Music', the backround music incorporates parts of Roy Ayers 'Running Away'. The sampling is done very well. Funky disco influenced house music never gets tired or old, gotta dig hard, records like this are a must in any house music lovers bag. I first got familiar with Alexander Purkart's productions with the 1999 Love Parade compilation. Good grooves.

From Rivera's Groove Box #334: Bella Boo - Do The Right Thing

Bella Booty, err... I mean Bella Boo is making deep house which makes you feel warm and good inside, and also makes your feet move to the beat. Her debut album is filled with gems like this track. Deep jazzy mystical. Is that Ornette Coleman's 'A Shape Of Jazz To Come' on the front cover? Nice.

From Rivera's Groove Box #333: Nørus - Make A Move

I get this track a lot in my Youtube recommendations. I must say, I quite like it. Good lo-fi house is not easy to come by nowadays, because the formula has gotten so generic and so many recycled ideas. The vocals are sampled from Beastie Boys 'Intergalactic'. Very cool.

From Rivera's Groove Box #332: Kings Of Tomorrow - Tear It Up (Lenny Fontana Remix)

Day go by, and already it is November. It has rained almost everyday, it makes me feel not so good. I listened to a lot of depressing music, mainly rock and a lot of Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth ain't really that depressing, but I can't say it's happy music either. This is stuff what can elevate and fuel your already existing anxiety and depression. It's hard to explain. The music is rocking, but it makes you feel not very joyous. So naturally I kinda drifted back to my happy place - god damn house music. I checked out a lot of Kings Of Tomorrow early productions, and re-discovered some gems I had forgotten. 'Finally' is my favorite deep house track of all time, but then I remebered, that 'Tear It Up' is almost as good track. The only thing I don't like about this remix is the generic disco-house drumloop, which seems like copied lazily from a stock loop library (this is really common in house music). But gotta love those catchy house organs in this track.

From Rivera's Groove Box #331: Carla dal Forno - Took A Long Time

Australian singer/multi-instrumentalist Carla dal Forno writes haunting, downcast tunes influenced by post-punk, dub, and ambient pop. This is my favorite song from her latest album 'Look Up Sharp'.

From Rivera's Groove Box #330: Underground Resistance - Quadrasonic

Beautiful techno music from outer space! That acidic bassline is so infectious, the drum programming is super tight, the vocals are meditatingly deep. This is an early UR production and I think it is one of their finest tracks together with 'The Theory', 'Transition' and 'Jupiter Jazz'.

From Rivera's Groove Box #329: Syncopation - Give It Up

Hold up, hold up... why haven't I heard this track before? Such amazing jazz-funk grooves melted together with a luscious house beat and euphoric vocals. Dayum! Early house music at its best.

From Rivera's Groove Box #328: Groove Committee - I Want To Hold You

Victor Simonelli is responsible for so many classic house tracks. One of my favorite producers in dance music. His tracks are soulful and deep, they often feature vocals from talented singers and most importantly, his productions have some of the best piano sounds in all house music. Just listen to this song. Sweet sweet house vibes.

From Rivera's Groove Box #327: Bumforhire - Club 2000

Another great production from the early days of Mood II Swing. You just gotta love the raw house energy these guys had back in the 90s. This track has a nice build up, it has this ravey intro which then turns into a soulful hands-in-the-air type of track with elevating organs and lush pads. Truly a masterclass example of how house music should sound.

From Rivera's Groove Box #326: Indigo Feat. Joy Malcolm - Fly To The Moon (The Mood II Swing Sentinal Dub)

Another great classic remix from Mood II Swing. Here the boys go a little nuts with all these synthesizer sounds. You don't really hear that in house music. It sounds very techno.

From Rivera's Groove Box #325: George Acosta & Eric Paredes - Time

Real nice early garage house from George Acosta and Eric Paredes. George Acosta changed his sound to fit a more mainstream club sound later in his career, but this track is truly beautiful deep house. To witness the genius of this track, Prosumer opened his Fabric 79 mix with it, mixing it smoothly into Chez Damier.

From Rivera's Groove Box #324: Grant Nelson - Move This Rhythm

Wonderful as hell swingin' early UK garage house from the man, the legend Grant Nelson. Without his input garage music would be much duller. So many classics to choose!

From Rivera's Groove Box #323: West Coast Swingaz - I Groove 4 U

I groove for you, so you don't have to (but you can, if you want to). Something for ya house heads. West Coast Swingaz delivering a phat choon with a nice and tight house groove, swinging drums and some raw sounding dubbed up chords!

From Rivera's Groove Box #322: Outlander - Vamp

I recently listened to a Belgian rave mixtape from the early 90s, and this tune still stood out the best of the rest. There is a reason why this is such a classic staple of rave music, techno and house.

To Nelle,
I would do everything I did again and again
I would do everything I did again and again
I would do everything I did again and again
I would do everything I did again and again
I would do everything I did again and again
Yes. I would.
I will always love you.

From Rivera's Groove Box #319: Lectroluv - If We Try

From the same guy who brought you Sextravaganza 'Theme From Sextravaganza', this is a sublime example of early 90s deep house, with lush chords, creating that lovely afterhours feeling. The dub mix is the best.

From Rivera's Groove Box #318: Gems For Jem - Everbody! Groove Me

Oldschool early garage madness with some hip house touches, from 1991. I wish there was a dub or instrumental version of this track. The groove is tight. Also recomenned: Gems For Jem 'We're On The Move (Album Mix).

From Riveras Groove Box #317: Industry Standard - Shine Bright In The Night

Today I woke up with this track playing in my head. It's an outstanding track, possibly one of the best and memorable UK deep garage house tracks. It was a rare track for years, but it has fortunately enough repressed recently. What I like about this track, is that it goes through many changes in the mood and feeling. It never gets boring. Irresistably lovable!

From Rivera's Groove Box #316: Paranoid London Feat. DJ Genesis - Lovin U

So beautiful it makes you cry. Great stripped down acid grooves with some deep and touching vocals from DJ Genesis. Mad props for Paranoid London for inviting her to do lyrics and vocals for this! DJ Genesis has been in the scene for a while but never really received the props I think she should deserve? Check out 'Back In The Middle' and 'It's You' from her. Great deep house!

From Rivera's Groove Box #315: Armando - Don't Take it

'Don't take it. I won't'. Heavy. It's a point of discussion how much of this track is actually done by Armando and how much of the track was reconstructed by Let's Pet Puppies label owner Thomos and the Chicago sound engineer Johnny Fiasco. Armando's track was unfinished from the late 80s and it sat on a reel tape for over 20 years, until Thomos picked it up from a Marcus Mixx locker. I think Armando did the beat and recorded the vocals by Sharvette. Rest of the track sounds too post 2000. If you know better about the tracks history, let me know.

From Rivera's Groove Box #314: Crustation - Flame (Mood II Swing Vocal Mix)

Make house great again. There's just something in 90s house music I find really insatiable, it's something the producers of nowadays keep lacking. Maybe it's the way music is produced now - with DAWs which automate so much of the production. Ableton is such a powerful tool, but yet it has inspired to make people boring and predictable electronic dance music. Almost all of the music I buy now are reissues of older tracks and tracks which have that old school vibe... oh god... I'm now one of those guys who moan about 'the good ol' days'!

From Rivera's Groove Box #311: Emerson - If You Need Me, Call Me

This great electro boogie jam sat unreleased for 31 years, until Kalita Records found it and released it. The musical product of the visionary couple Emerson and Leora Sandidge, If You Need Me, Call Me is a personal collection of synthesizer and drum-machine-led boogie of the highest quality. It was unreleased because of the artists personal issues.

From Rivera's Groove Box #310: Plastic Soul Junkies - You Took My Love

This is one of many Terrence Parker's projects, and oh boy, can he put a house groove together really nicely and tight. Love those swinging drums, the way the sampled vocals sound, and those lively sounding keys. A true Detroit deep house track.

From Rivera's Groove Box #309: Patrice Scott - Movin In

Detroiter Patrice Scott delivers a very deep house track - a fluid, funk-fuelled affairs bristling with jazzy electric piano motifs, swinging New Jersey garage influenced drums, liquid synth bass and some decidedly Larry Heard style musical flourishes.

From Rivera's Groove Box #307: Jazz-N-Groove - Open Up

Without a doubt the best from early Jazz-N-Groove, when they were into deep garage house, later in the 90s they started producing soulful vocal rich house music, with releases like on the Soulfuric label, they really became known to. The EP this track is from, was really rare and sought after for a while, but thankfully it got repressed. Jazz-N-Groove really have earned their place among house masters!

From Rivera's Groove Box #306: DJ's Rule - Work That Sucker

Work that sucker down! This is as good as it gets, some proper deep house vibes from 1991. I don't think it sounds dated at all.

Just listen to those mad cowbells and rims going on in this track! All saturated in a fuzzy lo-fi aesthetic. My kind of house music!

From Rivera's Groove Box #304: DJ Sunroof - Beat Down

Classic NYC deep garage house vibes influenced track with a lovely lo-fi touch. Featuring the stage antics vocals from a Loleatta Holloway live perfomance. Many old school house tracks have sampled this live performance which went down at the Better Days venue in New York sometime in the late 80s. Loleatta never wanted this performance to be released or sampled, but a recording got into the hands of Junior Vasquez who released that without asking anyway. Loleatta got real mad about that! The next time she saw Junior, she chased him down the street wanting to beat the crap out of him. True story. This performance is also where Armando got his vocal samples for '100% Of Dissin' You'.

From Rivera's Groove Box #303: Anthony 'Shake' Shakir - Get A Feeling

Totally raw. A pounding distorted kick drum, deep bass, minimal keys and a funky feeling. 90s Detroit house music at its best. Samples 'Something's Got A Hold Of Me' by Etta James.

From Rivera's Groove Box #302: Soundstream - Doctor Loop

There's still good disco and funky house out there, and the Panorama Bar resident DJ Frank Timm has released the debut album of his main project Soundstream. But I think this album sounds mediocre at best. The tracks don't have the same amount of ballsy-ness that made the previous singles so stand out. But it is still a good album and must have for true house music lovers all over the world. You could pick out any of the tracks from the album and just drop it anywhere in a DJ set... I think that's why Sound Stream is still one of the best producers out there. My fav cut from the album is 'Doctor Loop' - just because how gritty it sounds. Pure lo-fi filth!

From Rivera's Groove Box #301: Gene Farris - The Big Doobie

The feeling, when you're looking for a track ID, and when founding it, you'll discover, it's one of those records you bought a long time ago and then totally forget about the B-side. Great track from the Chicago legend Gene Farris.

From Rivera's Groove Box #300: West Coast Swingaz - Keep Running

I've got a love for house music, and old obscure sci-fi B-movies. West Coast Swingaz ties these things nicely together. Loopy funky disco house, with a lo-fi flavour. Disco loop sampled from Stephanie Mills 'You Can't Run From My Love'. Video footage from 'Zontar! The Thing From Venus' - a 1966 TV movie, which itself is a remake of 'It Conquered The World', a 1956 low budget Roger Corman movie. Frank Zappa mentioned the movie in his song 'Cheepnis'.

From Rivera's Groove Box #299: Ace & The Sandman - Let Your Body Talk

Ace & The Sandman is Eric Lewis and Merwyn Sanders from Virgo Four, pioneers of early Chicago deep house. This track is a combination of Virgo Four melody and a proper acid 303 line, giving the track a deep feeling. This track is one of the best kept secrets from the early Chicago house scene. I'm really thankful of having discovering this track.

pühapäev, 13. jaanuar 2019

From Rivera's Groove Box #298: DJ Q & Dominic Capello - Robots In Parliament

DJ Q is really good when it comes down to cut some grooves from disco tracks and putting them in use for some proper house workouts. This track is from his very first EP. I'm not even sure if the track title is correct, because on the vinyl record center label the right track title should be 'Track 1' and 'Robots In Parliament' should be a more tech house sounding number. But the current title of the track is according to the digital release. Well, doesn't matter, the track is bangin'!

From Rivera's Groove Box #297: Urban Farmers - Last Chance To Dance

Andrew Weatherall played this track in his 1996 Essential Mix. I've encountered plenty of people who've sworn that this is their favourite mix ever. Some cool digital jazz vibes in this track.

From RIvera's Groove Box #296: Club 69 - Let Me Be Your Underwear (Hot Pants Underground Club)

Club 69 was Peter Rauhofer's best known project and 'Let Me Be Your Underwear' probably his most remembered production. A smooth garage house belter of the early 90s, a true club track which has stood the test of time and actually sounds very up to date for the current underground house scene.

From Rivera's Groove Box #295: L'll Louis - I'm Hot For You

I want you to pay close attention on this one, because this is not a Lil' Louis, the Chicago house legend, production... even if the name suggests so. The name on the records says 'L'IL LOUIS' and it is not a mistake or mistype. This monicker was used to make it look like the track was the work of Lil' Louis, confusing the DJs, dancers and all house music lovers all over the world. The track samples the bassline of 1989 Italian house track 'Lee Lewis - Atmosphere' produced by two Italian guys with collaboration of the real OG Chicago Lil' Louis. It's basically a remix of 'French Kiss'. Vocals are sampled from Karen Young's 'Hot Shot' and Tony Lee's 'Reach Up'. The drumloop is from Bobby Konders 'Version'. Man! That is a proper mashup, but it is so well done. Folks all around the world still mistake this for a Lil' Louis track!
