From Rivera's Groove Box #135: Sound Waves - I Wanna Feel The Music

So many times I almost forget how much I love this track. Then it springs into my mind without a warning. This really is the template for the mid 90s deep house music. It came out in 1991 on Strictly Rhythm, you know, back when that label actually meant something (nowadays it seems they have lost that magic touch). Probably the best thing that label has put out!

From Rivera's Groove Box #133: Beato - Untitled

Russian Torrent Versions is a sublabel of L.I.E.S. - the most loved techno and house label of recent years by the underground dance scene. Some of the releases are very good, and some are your average bangers. This one by Greg Beato is a very cool stripped down old school flava house track. Sounds like a unreleased instrumental deep house track from the early 90s. Why the label is named Russian Torrent Versions is a funny story and I'm not sure if it's the truth or just a myth - because the L.I.E.S. catalogue was uploaded to a popular russian torrent site called 'Funkysouls', the guys behind L.I.E.S. label uploaded some 'alternative versions' of forthcoming tracks to the site. A little later they caught Nina Kraviz playing these 'russian torrent versions' of the tracks! Maybe this is just a crazy made up backround story, I'm not totally sure! I'm not liking the harder techno tracks which are being released on the label, but this track by Beato is a winner. Super simple and effective.

Russian Torrent Versions on ühe viimaste aastate palavamalt armastatud house ja techno plaadifirma L.I.E.S. võsuke.

From Rivera's Groove Box #132: Popol Vuh - Affenstunde

Lately I've been interested in modular synthesizers, their history and the sounds these wonderful machines create. Though I'll probably never own one in real life (because how expensive they are), I'm still fascinated by them. I have seen musicians perform live on modular synthesizers, and the sounds truly feel alive and natural. They sound natural because they are analog, and all sounds from the nature surrounding us are analog. Even if they produce cosmic out of this earth sound, it still sounds natural and good, not alienating and strange. Modular synthesizer music started to appear on records in the early seventies, before that they were used rarely and only in experimental music compositions. Critics didn't like these new electronic sounds at first, in fact they thought these sounds were a travesty - unnatural sounds! But there were some brave and adventurous musicians out there, who mastered these new music sounds and techniques and created new musical soundscapes.  Like Florian Fricke and his group Popol Vuh for example - their 1970 record 'Affenstunde' is a pioneering piece of ambient cosmic space drone music. It's one of the earliest Krautrock records to sound so strange and out of this world. Soon after this record came out, lot of other german Krautrock groups came out with similar experimental electronic music records (Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Cluster, Ash Ra Temple, Klaus Schulze, Faust, Harmonia). I really like these strange electronic sounds. To me, they sound very soothing and relaxing.

Krautrock, kosmische musik, hea kraam, kuulake kurat ja avardage enda mõistust hea muusikaga! Eriti hea laadida enda mp3 pleierisse ja kuulata magamaminemisel. Lend läbi kosmose alaku!

From Rivera's Groove Box #131: Robert Armani - Ambulance

I think that the harder Chicago house tracks which could be described as Chicago's own version of techno (lovably known as the basement sound) influenced way more the rising European techno and rave scene than the techno sound which was coming out of Detroit! Because in Europe, the DJs and ravers welcomed these hard records as techno, and labels such like Dance Mania were in hot demand. These Chicago house tracks were played together with acid and techno records, thus creating the European rave and techno sound. When the DJs turned their heads towards production, they crafted their new techno tracks with all those influences in mind especially the hard minimal drum patterns of Chicago house. But back in Chicago, the producers of these 'basement sounds' didn't knew for a while that their tracks were getting such attention back in Europe. In Chicago, they were outlaws, doing the 'ghetto' sound of house music, which was very underground and in some way shunned by the more mainstream seeking house artists. I think the label 'Djax'Up-Beats' proves my point very well: most of their early catalogue is composed of Chicago house producers works, and their talent scout was the inventor of the basement sound himself - Steve Pointdexter.

Mulle tundub, et Euroopa 90ndate alguse reivi- ja techno skeeni mõjutas Chicago karmim house saund, niinimetatud 'keldrisaund', isegi rohkem kui Detroit techno. Euroopas võeti vastu neid jõuliseid Chicago house lugusid, eriti 'Dance Mania' plaadifirma omasid, kui techno muusikat. Neid lugusid mängiti segamini koos acid ja techno muusikaga. Selle mõjusid on näha hiljem avaldatud Euroopa techno produtsentide loomingus, kus trummid on koostatud vägagi Chicago house kõla järgi. Kuid Chicagos ei teadnud need produtsendid pikka aega kui populaarsed on nende lood Euroopa reividel. Kodus olid nad underground sõdalased, põlatud meinstriimi tähelepanu otsivate produtsentide poolt. Ma arvan, et minu väikesel teoorial on alust küll - vaadates Euroopa ühe esimese techno plaadifirma 'Djax- Up-Beats' varajast kataloogi, on näha, et see koosneb suures osas Chicago produtsentidest. See on sellepärast, et selle plaadifirma talendijahtijaks oli Chicago 'keldrisaundi' looja Steve Pointdexter ('Work That') isiklikult.

From Rivera's Groove Box #130: Escape Force - L1

Escape Force is Steve Summers, Terekke and Bookworms (all representatives of the notorious techno and house label L.I.E.S.). Their sound is minimal, but very deep and full of hidden emotions. It's deeper than your average deep house tracks. The video accompanying to this track is 'Pas De Deux' - a short dance film by Norman McLaren. It reminds me the work of Oskar Schlemmer's 'Triadisches Ballet'. It's as much beautiful and hypnotizing! I'm not sure - is this sound the future of deep house music? Because it sounds like out of this world.

Escape Force on Steve Summers, Terekke ja Bookworms (kõik hetke ühe kõmulisema techno ja house plaadifirma L.I.E.S. artistid). Nende saund on minimaalne, kuid väga sügav ja emotsioone täis. Diibimast diibim deep house. Sellele loole on tehtud video, mis kasutab efektiivselt Norman McLaren'i tanstsulist lühifilmi 'Pas De Deux (1968). See lühifilm meenutab ühte minu lemmikut - Oskar Schlemmer'i 'Triaadilist Balletti'. Sama ilus ja hüpnotiseeriv! Ei teagi, kas see ongi deep house muusika tulevik? Sest see kõlab kui siitpoolt maailma väljastpoolt tulnud.

From Rivera's Groove Box #128: Peaking Lights - Amazing And Wonderful

Peaking Lights was love at first listen to me, it is not often that this happens to me. The sounds these professional sound designers and builders create are truly exceptional. And then they combine those sounds into these beautiful lo-fi experimental grooves. It's interesting and a real journey to listen to! This song is, as the title says - 'Amazing And Wonderful'.

From Rivera's Groove Box #127: Tom & Jerry - Dancer

Some say this could be one of the best drum'n'bass tracks ever. Quite possibly. This sweet jungle track came out back in 1994. Drum'n'bass with it's stiff techstep beats was yet to come, and the breakbeat loops were ruling the dancefloor. Because I was very young back then, I didn't knew anything about this kind of underground dance music, and I still discover wonderful tracks from the early to mid 90s. And it's really cool that the 4 Hero guys are behind the Tom & Jerry moniker.

Mõned väidavad, et see lugu võib olla üks kõigi aegade parimaid drum'n'bass lugusid. Võib-olla. See imehea jungle lugu tuli välja aastal 1994. Tom & Jerry nime all peituvad 4 Hero poisid.
